History Sweet old man Rancher has been a great companion for my husband and I these last 2 months while undergoing heartworm treatment. He was a stray and picked up with a female bulldog but unfortunately, he was left behind after she was adopted from the shelter. He spent the next 2 months in the shelter with staff that described him as a “Netflix and chill” dog. To our surprise, he was very calm in a shelter environment and didn’t need anytime to acclimate to a “home life”.
Personality/Health Per vets’ orders, Rancher needs to stay calm and not get too much exercise while undergoing heart worm treatment which matches his lazy couch potato personality perfectly (gets winded easily). Definitely one of the most dainty/gentle dogs we’ve ever fostered. He loves human interaction and will follow you anywhere and everywhere (mainly women). He does bark when the doorbell rings but stops if we tell him “No” firmly. He is also the perfect work from home dog as he will never leave your side. Favorite activities: Drinking water, stretching, snuggling, and yawning. He does have a fear of either basements or wood stairs, as he will not follow us into our basement, but we have recently convinced him to walk past the basement door while it is open. We have not seen any issues with him navigating our carpeted stairs, unless he’s excited to go to bed, then he launches off the wood floor and falls up the stairs (yes, you read that right). We do crate him in our bedroom when we both leave the house and at night (will sleep soundly throughout the night and morning). He enters his crate on his own and loves being in it but does bark if he can’t see us or our dog in sight. He does mark which we have been working on and will most likely subside once his heart is healthy and he can be neutered. Commands he knows: Sit, down, and stay.
Cohabitation Rancher and our senior female bulldog/pitbull have gotten along great since day one but due to his suspected deprivation of water in his past, his water intake should be monitored (upsets his stomach) as well as while drinking around other pets. On occasion, they do share an open crate and teepee to nap together. We do not have children in our household, but Rancher has met several children and strangers while on vacation and has done famously with them.
What makes him special His permanent curious head tilt, semi naked kinked broken tail (does not affect him), not a flight risk, very audible farts but don’t stink, eager to please, and what we are most grateful for…he doesn’t jump on people, chew up anything, and is an EXCELLENT car rider.
